How Schools Can Leverage AI for Creative Learning

From lesson planning to assessment, AI is changing the way classrooms work—but its true potential lies in unlocking creativity.

A 2025 study published in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education explored the integration of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney into a digital storytelling curriculum. The findings revealed that these tools significantly enhanced students' higher-order thinking skills, including creative problem-solving and collaboration. By facilitating the creation and refinement of digital storytelling projects, AI serves as a catalyst for deeper engagement and imaginative expression.

What This Means for Canadian Classrooms

Across provinces, teachers are stretched thin. Integrating AI can help personalize instruction while freeing up time for deeper, more creative exploration. For example:

  • AI writing assistants help students brainstorm and structure ideas, encouraging more confident self-expression. A study in Scientific Reports found that university students use AI tools like ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, refine arguments, and verify facts, thereby enhancing their writing process.

  • AI art and design tools allow students to prototype and visualize projects in ways traditional tools can’t. In the "Art, AI & Robotics" course, students learned to design and program robots that create art, applying design concepts to computational thinking and culturally relevant STEAM learning.

The OECD’s 2023 report, "Generative AI in Education: From Hype to Reality?", reminds us that AI isn’t here to take over the classroom—it’s here to make it better. When used the right way, AI can help personalize learning for students, lighten the load for teachers, and create space for more hands-on, creative experiences. It’s not about replacing what works—it’s about adding a new tool to help teachers do what they do best.

A Call to Innovate, Not Replace

Let’s be clear—AI doesn’t replace teaching. It enhances it. The magic still happens through the teacher-student relationship. AI just helps you get more out of your time and your students’ potential.

As Canadian classrooms continue to evolve, let’s make room for tools that not only lighten the load—but spark new ideas.
